March Assembly: Verbal Vagaries

Don't forget to spring forward and join us as we team up with Sunday Assembly Silicon Valley to learn about Verbal Vagaries!

Please note the new Zoom Link below.

We have an exciting lineup for this month's LA Assembly; unfortunately an unexpected illness has befallen our featured speaker and foiled best laid plans. We wish her rest and science-based healing, and in the meantime this Sunday we're vacationing in lovely Sunday Assembly Silicon Valley! Please join us at 11am, or even earlier if you'd like to mingle in breakout rooms starting at 10:30.

Ambiguities in language, such as multiple meanings of words and phrases, seem to make communication inefficient and error prone. But research shows humans are quite adept at making rapid inferences using context clues such as gestures and intonation. This means that although ambiguity might seem inefficient, it is also adaptive--it has evolved to be ambiguous in just the right ways to still be understood by humans.

Our speaker, Benjamin Bergen, directs the Language and Cognition Lab at UC San Diego where he studies language and cognition in the laboratory and in the wild. He’s also the author of Louder than Words, an introduction to the cognitive science of how we manage to extract meaning from the language around us.

We'll be singing with the band on:
Hand in my Pocket - Alanis Morissette
Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield

Our celebration also includes a reading, how a member is doing their best, and a moment of reflection. Greg C. will be hosting.

Don't let our RSVP numbers dissuade you. We typically have 30+ people join us at our Assemblies. 🙂

Mingling will be from 10:30-11
Assembly from 11-12
And more mingling after
